What is Traffic Light System
Traffic lights normally consist of three signals, transmitting meaningful information to road users through colours and symbols, including arrows and bicycles. The regular traffic light colours are red, yellow (also known as amber), and green arranged vertically or horizontally in that order.
Benefits of Traffic Light System
Safety: Traffic signs provide essential information and warnings to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, helping them navigate the roads safely. Signs indicate speed limits, stop signs, pedestrian crossings, and other potential hazards, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
Orderly Traffic Flow: Traffic signs help regulate and organize the flow of vehicles on the roads. They indicate the Right Of Way and lane usage and provide guidance on merging, turning, and parking, which promotes efficient movement of traffic and minimizes congestion.
Communication and Understanding: Traffic signs serve as a universal language for all road users. They use standardized symbols, colors, and shapes that are easily recognizable and understood, even by individuals who may not share a common language or have reading difficulties.
Compliance with Laws and Regulations: Traffic signs convey legal requirements and enforce traffic rules. They inform drivers of speed limits, parking restrictions, no-entry zones, and other regulations, ensuring compliance and reducing the likelihood of traffic violations.
Predictability: Consistent use of traffic signs creates predictability on the roads. When drivers and pedestrians are familiar with the meaning of different signs, they can anticipate actions and adjust their behavior accordingly, promoting smoother traffic flow and reducing the risk of collisions.
Guidance and Direction: Traffic signs provide guidance and direction to drivers, especially on unfamiliar routes or in complex road networks. Signs indicating routes, exits, distances to destinations, and landmarks help drivers navigate and reach their intended destinations with ease.
Public Awareness and Education: Traffic signs contribute to public awareness and education about road safety. By consistently encountering signs and understanding their meanings, individuals develop a greater awareness of traffic rules and responsible behavior, leading to a safer road environment.
Types Of Vehicle Detection Sensors In A Traffic Light System

Timers
This is one of the oldest methods of controlling traffic signals. Every intersection with lights has a single control hub/machine/computer in a housing nearby that can be programmed to switch lights at specific time intervals.
Induction Loop Sensors
This is the more modern and one of the most widely used signal control systems available nowadays. These systems use a difference in inductance to monitor the presence of vehicles near an intersection. There is a loop of induction coils embedded inside the asphalt connected to a nearby generator/power source. Once powered up, the coils start to build an electromagnetic field with a certain level of inductance. Once a vehicle enters this field, the steel surfaces of the vehicle change the inductance of the field. This change is picked up by the sensors in the system which communicates with the traffic signal.
Radar Detectors
Unlike the previous system, a radar detector works above the ground. These systems utilize microwave signals to detect the movement of vehicles toward and away from them. These are generally mounted on traffic signal poles or arms.in order to work, the vehicle must be moving faster than 3 miles per hour/4.8 kilometers per hour.
The biggest issue with these sensors is their need for a direct line of sight with vehicles. Meaning that any obstruction like billboards, adverse weather, etc. Can make these systems not work properly.
Video Camera Sensors
Some traffic signals utilize video camera detectors to regulate the flow of traffic. These systems use a camera and vehicle detection software/algorithms to identify the presence of vehicles inside a narrow detection zone. These are best for locations where the rads are not properly made like in remote or rural areas.

Traffic lights are designed to safely manage vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. There are two main types: fixed time and dynamic control.
Fixed time traffic signals use a timer to change the lights at a fixed interval. They could be as short as 30 seconds or as long as several minutes, depending on the intersection’s historical traffic data. These traffic lights use an electro-mechanical signal controller, which has movable components and a dial timer. This allows the light to switch and hold light colors for the predetermined amount of time.
Dynamic traffic light control systems work by adapting their timing to current traffic conditions. They use a detector, which can communicate with the traffic light control system to let them know about current traffic. When an intersection is jammed, they’ll adjust timing to let traffic flow better.
Dynamic systems use detectors both in the road’s surface and above the light. When a car drives over the road-embedded detector, it sends a signal to the control system. This tells the system whether just one car is waiting to go through the intersection, multiple cars or none at all. You’ve probably noticed this effect before. If you’ve ever driven up to an empty intersection and the light magically turned green, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve perfected your telekinetic powers. It’s usually because the detectors above and beneath the road have “seen” your car and adjusted the timing accordingly.
These systems use a relatively complex system that allows all the lights in an intersection to communicate with one another. Otherwise, they’d run the risk of causing accidents. Generally, they include a main controller, control circuit, timer, clock signal generator, decoder, decoder drive circuit and digital display decoder drive circuit. Each component plays a critical role in detecting current traffic and communicating the message to the main controller, which relays the message to other traffic lights.
Dynamic systems are more expensive to install and maintain, due to the sensors. Not every municipality is equipped to install them (or their even more sophisticated counterparts, smart traffic lights). They may be configured differently based on each intersection’s needs and who manufactured the equipment.
The type of traffic light control system you use depends on budget, traffic levels and other municipal concerns.
Traffic Light System: Function, Importance, And Evolution
Traffic light systems are an essential component of transportation infrastructure that regulate vehicular traffic at intersections and pedestrian crossings. These systems serve a crucial function in ensuring the safe and efficient flow of traffic, thereby contributing to road safety and congestion reduction.
Traffic light systems typically consist of a network of traffic lights strategically positioned at road intersections and pedestrian crossings. The traffic lights are equipped with sensors and detectors that monitor the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, and they are programed to change their color according to pre-determined schedules or in response to real-time traffic conditions.
The standard traffic light system includes three types of lights: red, yellow, and green. The red light indicates that the vehicles must stop, the yellow light indicates that the vehicles must prepare to stop, while the green light indicates that the vehicles may proceed. Pedestrians are indicated to cross by the green light, while they are warned to stop by the red light or to proceed by the green light.
Traffic light systems have been around for more than a century, with the first traffic lights being installed in London in 1868. The technology has evolved significantly since then, with modern traffic lights using computer-controlled systems that can automatically adjust the duration and sequence of the lights to respond to changing traffic conditions.
Traffic light systems play a crucial role in transportation management, ensuring safe and efficient flow of traffic at road intersections and pedestrian crossings. They help to minimize accidents and traffic congestion, thereby contributing to road safety and improving quality of life for city dwellers. In conclusion, traffic light systems are an indispensable component of urban transportation infrastructure that have evolved significantly over time and continue to provide a crucial function in managing road traffic safely and efficiently.
The composition of traffic signal hardware equipment mainly includes the following 6 parts
Traffic lights
It is a light-emitting device suspended over the road or set on the roadside lamp post, which is equipped with color signal lights.
Vehicle detector
When the vehicle passes through the detector, the facility that can detect traffic parameters according to the induction principle is a necessary facility of the inductive signal control system.
Wireless remote control device
Turn on and off traffic lights to control the red light when emergency vehicles pass.
Ancillary facilities
It includes traffic signal lamp pole, lamp post and its foundation, base and foundation of signal controller, pipeline and pole for embedding or hanging transmission line, etc.
Electronic police (camera)
Monitor illegal vehicles.
Single chip microcomputer system
The core of the whole signal light control.
Specialized Traffic Lights and Their Meanings
Flashing Lights
Flashing lights warn you of potentially dangerous situations or something ahead that you must be extra careful with. There are two flashing colors: red and yellow.
Flashing Yellow Light
A flashing yellow light means you must slow down and move with caution. It warns drivers of a tricky situation ahead such as a school crossing for example.
Traffic Signals with Arrows
Arrow signals are part of the highway code for turning. They control the driving flow in specific lanes. There are four types of traffic light arrows: red, yellow, blinking yellow, and green. Let’s see what each stands for.
Flashing Yellow Arrow
A flashing yellow arrow means that you can turn, but must do it carefully. Oncoming cars will have a green light and go first so you should be cautious and give way to those vehicles and people walking.
Flashing Red Light
A flashing red light tells you to stop moving and follow the right-of-way rules. Think of this light as a ‘STOP’ sign, and treat it accordingly.
Red Arrow
When you see a red arrow, do not turn in the direction it is pointing. Wait for a green light or green arrow before you make a turn.
Yellow Arrow
A yellow arrow means that the opportunity to turn is about to end. Just like with a red arrow, you should wait for a green light.
Green Arrow
A green arrow is your sign to go. You can make a turn in that direction, while approaching cars, cyclists, and pedestrians will stop at a red light.
What do flashing yellow lights mean
Yellow arrows
The same rules apply to yellow arrow traffic lights as they do for regular yellow traffic lights. That means you should not enter the intersection if you can safely stop before the stop line. If you have already entered the intersection when the light turns yellow or red, you must exit the intersection as soon as it is safe to do so.
At pedestrian lights
You may encounter a pedestrian crossing that has yellow lights flashing. If the pedestrian lights have only a red and yellow light, you can proceed with caution when the yellow light is flashing but you must give way to any pedestrians. These lights are turned off when not in operation.
Types of Traffic Lights
Incandescent/Halogen-based Traffic Lights – This traffic light is the traditional type which uses incandescent or halogen bulbs. Many people eventually switched from this type of traffic light to another such as LED-based traffic lights because of its low efficiency light output and a single point of failure or filament burnout.
LED Traffic Lights – This type of traffic light lamps are using light-emitting diodes as an alternative to the traditional incandescent or halogen light bulbs. LED traffic lights are composed of an array of LED bulbs arranged in diverse patterns, unlike the incandescent-based traffic lights which use a single large bulb. These multiple LED bulbs when viewed from a distance, appears as a continuous light source. Most consumers prefer this type of traffic light because of its numerous advantages such as greater energy efficiency, capability to be solar-powered, much longer lifetime between replacements, bulbs will still operate even if some of the LED bulbs in the array fail, brighter illumination with better contrast against direct sunlight, capability to display multiple colours and patterns from the same lamp, and much faster switching. Instead of sudden burn-out like incandescent-based lights, LEDs start to gradually dim when they wear out which indicates the need for replacement.
Wig Wag Traffic Light – Wig Wag Traffic Lights are more noticeable than simple traffic lights. They are generally used at level and bridge crossings, and emergency services station such as fire/ambulance stations where there is a need to stop ordinary traffic flow in order to enable emergency vehicles to exit the station. They can also be easily incorporated into a Traffic Management System to control a facility or site. They are also extremely useful especially in factories where the clutter of other signs may get a red traffic light goes unnoticed and in instances where there may be a need to stop all traffic while a vehicle needs to emerge or reverse out of a blind spot.
Walking Man Traffic Lights – Walking Man Traffic Lights are usually LED based indicators used for pedestrian flow at traffic management stations. A steady “standing man” or “don’t walk” signal is an indication that a pedestrian cannot enter the street in that signal’s direction, while a steady “walking man” or “walk signal” indicates that pedestrians can start crossing the street toward that signal.
